Classical Guitar
I learned to play the acoustic guitar at my junior high school (7th - 9th grades). I was very excited to be taking lessons because my family attended a church who's membership included many guitar players that accompanied the worship service and they permitted low skilled players (like me) to strum along while sitting within the first couple of pews. I was a low achiever in school (I mostly majored in daydreaming), but now that I could take lessons as one of my elective classes and since there was no other way that I was ever going to be able to take lessons, I was "all in" about going to school. But guitar class (and lunch) was pretty much the only productive part of my day there. Since I was socially reclusive ("uncool") gaining micro chops** was very good for my self-esteem.
When I finished my three years there I had to transfer to the high school where there were was only the marching band or chorus. So I relied heavily on the other musicians (and anyone else who would) to show me new riffs and strumming patterns. Eventually I ended up registering for college, quite by accident. After getting a AS in Hospitality Management at Palm Beach State college I transferred to Palm Beach Atlantic University where I was able to resume my guitar lessons in the Classical Guitar Performance program taught by Mr. David Scantar. Upon completion, I was so exhausted with the amount of time and effort that it took for me (and for the others that pushed me) to reach such a lofty goal, one that I had never before imagined, that I was too insecure to attempt any higher achievements. Today I regret that I stopped, but it is most likely too late now, some thirty years later, to get back into it again.
